Where: Los Angeles
What: Join these creatives on a colorful day in LA.
Who: Meet the Van Der Hiddes: Mama Felicity, Papa Jack, Big Brother Willem (6) and Little Sister Kate Reese (3, going on 4). Jack is a chef and co-founder of restaurant talent agency,
The Line. Felicity is a freelance photographer specializing in
fitness and corporate photography. The Van Der Hiddes live a relatively free-form life with lots of flexibility and time to play. The family of creatives has lived in Los Angeles for over a decade and love it here—especially their neighborhood, Silver Lake. From coffee with other parents to hikes and bike rides in Griffith Park, community gardening at the local school, to kids’ Capoeira in the Meadow, they take advantage of the myriad delights to be had near and far in this extraordinary city.
Downtown, Ages 3+
Jack and Felicity Van Der Hidde: The kids love playing at the new enclosed (read, more relaxing for parents) playground and amazing splash pad—fountains spurt from the ground and kids are free to jump in. Bring bathing suits, towels and snacks—they will get soaked! Perk: Starbucks directly next to the fountain for parental caffeination.
Kidspace Children's Museum
Pasadena, Ages 1+
J & FVDH: Great on hot summer days.. Cool AC indoors with lots of different interactive games covering the environment, science, and artistic forms of expressions. The man made “arroyo” in the back is fantastic for kids to play in. Tip: Kids must wear rubber shoes to play in the stream.
Griffith Park
Griffith, All ages
J & FVDH: Kids love racing to the top and parents like the tired kids and the killer views. We like stopping at the Observatory to check out the pendulum.
The Getty
Brentwood, Age 3+
J & FVDH: Riding the tram up to The Getty is a highlight and playing on the grounds. Lots of fun, kid-friendly events. Also, coffee.
Underwood Family Farms
Moorpark, Ages 3+
J & FVDH: Great place for the kids to get a bit of the Farm life feeling. Around Halloween we go pumpkin picking- and the amount of things they offer is insane! Games, face-painting, horse rides, hay rides, gem hunting, pig races, tons of food, pumpkin drops, cops and firemen, etc etc…it’s totally worth it. Tip: Buy tickets for the first weekends or on a weekday and it costs less.
Leo Carrillo State Beach
Malibu, Ages 3+
J & FVDH: Great campsite for families with young kids. Short walk to the beach where there are tide pools to explore and a cool cave. Great little camp store if you forget anything. The campsites are protected in the woods- not right on the beach.
Wood
Silver Lake, All ages
J & FVDH: Killer wood fired pizza, Walking distance from home, happy hour for Mama and Dad on the patio and super kid-friendly staff.
Osteria La Buca
Larchmont, Ages 3+
J & FVDH: Great Sunday family brunch with some of the best California /Italian food in LA. Also awesome for a date night.
Tacos Delta
Silver Lake, All ages
J & FVDH: Our go-to local taco stand in Silverlake. Great fries for the kids, shrimp and adobado tacos are the best items on the menu. Don’t forget the Chipotle sauce!
