Didn't book that Joshua Tree vacation house in time for a holiday getaway? No worries. Although wandering through the desert and howling at the star-studded sky may not be on your agenda anymore, staying in town for Memorial Day weekend will be sweet with a million and one things to do (none involving swarms of beach-goers):

Feathers of Fire: A Persian Epic
This weekend at the UCLA Freud Playhouse comes a one of a kind cultural experience—the largest shadow puppet play ever performed. Feathers of Fire: A Persian Epic unfolds the Old Persian saga of two star-crossed lovers, Zaul and Rudabeh. The story is over 1,000 years old, but the play itself draws on more modern influences like The Jungle Book, Rapunzel and Romeo and Juliet. The imagery and sound is so stunning, that Frances Ford Coppola himself even lauded it as "cinematic wizardry." The show has sold out in other cities, so act fast.
Deets: UCLA Freud Playhouse; May 27 8 p.m.; May 28, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. May 29 3 p.m. Reserve tickets
